Last night I lost a fellow Vietnam veteran. Bob McKenny was shot twice in the chest by a Virginia City policeman.
Patrick Flanagan
A pile of flowers, empty beer cans and smoked cigarettes are being piled up in front of the Fireman's BBQ restaurant where he was shot as a memorial.
For those of you who didn't know Bob, he was a bit crazy if he had a drink and could get somewhat violent. However, I have had him to my house, let him take a bath, shampoo his hair, washed his clothes and let him get a good night sleep. Not once did I fear for my life.
Bob lived on the streets of Virginia City for 30 years, ran for sheriff once, and lived off of what people threw away into the garbage cans of V.C. Bob might have been considered a homeless person, but he wasn't. He lived in a crate house on top of a hill outside of town, no heat, no telephone, no water, nothing. Kind of like being in Viet Nam all of his life. Bob used to give me a cigarette once in a while, and it was the simple things in life that he enjoyed that so many of us miss in our lives. He was smart and educated. He just lived a different life.
Three days before he died, somebody gave Bob a bicycle so he could ride home and carry his loot from the garbage cans with him. It was a long hike. (Bob last year took a vacation to Sacramento, Calif. and walked all the way and back). He drove the Sac. police nuts too. Well, the same cop took Bob's bicycle away, saying it had to be "stolen". Obviously, this was a case of profiling. Three days later, the same cop kills him right in front of everybody on the Main St. of V.C.
I was getting bored here, but today I marched in a demonstration against the police and their brutality in our town. Bob was not acting right, but he didn't deserve to die. There is more injustice in this town, and the demonstrations will continue tomorrow.
As is my style, I was on t.v. tonite, defending Bob and attacking the police Gestapo here. All I can think of is, "There, but for the grace of God, go I." For the first time, the community understands that what happened to Bob, could happen to me and to everyone else here. People are afraid of our police, but today they spoke with unity and courage, and spoke out to government that we will not tolerate injustice toward even the poor! I will never forget a comment from one of the demonstrators this morning, "I moved up here with my kids to get away from the gangs and the killing. We don't have gangs, but we have police who think they have a license to kill. I don't know which is worse."
Well, nothing in life is simple. This is complicated. There are two sides to this story I'm sure. However, a man is dead today who served his country well. Shouldn't he get some understanding, some compassion, some help, instead of just being killed dead.
All there is now, is just a moment of silence in memory of Bob. Put him in your prayers tonite, and pray that you are not next.

Hi Folks
I wasn't going to......
Said I'd keep my mouth shut here.......
But I Can't
I don't know what's happened to Virginia City
I don't know why there's such a change
But I do remember Virginia City
Where the Local Cop was our known friend
Where that Local Cop would take us home after a few Beers
Where the Local Cop Would give a wave instead of a speeding ticket
Where a Local Cop & I once worked on a flat tire together
Where a Local Cop warned of possible trouble in advance
Where Local Cops walked the streets at night checking for closed
doors
Virginia City was a unique place.....No where else will you find the mix
found in Virginia City.....
So now I hear that there's a speed monitor on "C" street
I heard that Karl & Connie got worked over
Threats have become common place
And the killing of Bob
Something is amiss in Virginia City
Something is "Wrong" in Virginia City
If it's one-two-three or the entire Police Dept
It must be brought under control
The Police are "Supposed" to "SERVE & PROTECT"
Not Maim, Mutilate or neglect the taxpayers
If it's the Gov of Virginia City that's in the wrong
I support a Tea Party followed by Tar & Feather Railings
If it's any given few
Extraction is the name of the game
It's not time to burn the town down
But it is time to fix the problem
And I'm sorry to report that it may be 48 hours too late for that fix
But fix it......"That Is A Must"
Before another atrocity finds it's way into the newspapers

Casino/Judicial Ethics Problem
Las Vegas Press

A Las Vegas woman says she is still fighting a downtown casino who has sued her 4 times because she openly protested against their harassment and gaming violations during her visits in October 1999.
Judge Ron Parraguirre, the original jusge, was eventually removed from the case.
Jo Meeks reported details of the casino's behavior in November 1999 to the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Following an extensive investigation, the casino sued her repeatedly in retaliation for speaking out on her experience at the casino. She says that Judge Parraguirre issued an unconstitutional court order against her, an order that prohibited her from discussing the harassment and gaming violations in press releases or on the Internet.
Before Judge Parraguirre was removed from the case, he issued fines in excess of $10,000 and a bench warrant for her arrest. She spent 7 days in jail.
"The media presents such a phony image of the casino industry in Las Vegas," says Meeks. "As you can see from my experience, this is a corrupt, fascist system that is backed by the court system. The Constitution obviously doesn't mean much here."
Meeks says she will take a polygraph test in response to the casino's false accusations that her comments were libel and untrue.
